The Co-ordinator of VTREC Delivers Speech and Presentation on Current Trend of Stolen Vehicle and the Impact to Key Stakeholders at the International Bodyshop Industry Symposium, IBIS ASEAN 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 June 2024:  The Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC), YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, this afternoon delivered her speech and presentation on The Current Trend of Stolen Vehicle in Malaysia and the Impact to the Motor Insurer, Vehicle Repair and Consumer at the International Bodyshop Industry Symposium 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, titled Transforming Tomorrow Together.

In her speech and presentation, YBrs Puan Mas Tina besides addresses the road traffic accident pressing issues due to collision, she also highlights VTREC’s roles and the milestones that VTREC and its stakeholders have had achieved in driving down vehicle theft in Malaysia while sharing and discussing the best practices.

 

According to YBrs Puan Mas Tina, “the number of vehicle theft in Malaysia dropped following close co-operation between VTREC, the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), Road Transport Department (RTD), PUSPAKOM Sdn Bhd and other agencies including Malaysia General Insurance Association (PIAM) and Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA).  The number of reported vehicle thefts nationwide has shown a decline each year”.

 

YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, the Co-ordinator of Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) explains the best practice sharing with the audience on the reduction of vehicle theft in Malaysia at the IBIS ASEAN Symposium 2024

 

 

“There were about 4,086 vehicle theft cases in 2023 compared to more than 38,300 vehicle theft cases in 2013, showing an overall decline of almost 90%.  In 2022 the record shows a total of 4,300 stolen vehicle cases which showing reduction of 6% as compared to 2023, according to insurance industry statistics.”

 

“In 2023, there percentage involved the theft of 51.4% motorcycle, 41.6% private car and 7% commercial vehicles.  Toyota Hilux sits as most stolen private car in 2023 recorded 331 cases, while Proton Wira recorded 172 cases at second highest and Perodua Myvi at third place with 109 cases”, she added.

YBrs Puan Mas Tina also pointed that the automotive industry is also growing in leaps and bounds, witnessing a significant rise in technology penetration resulting in the introduction of new features such as push start button or keyless system.  Thieves are now able to steal, less than 1 minute, vehicles that with push start button technology, which is relatively unexacting. As the keyless systems or push start button technology enable thieves to get into a car and drive off without having to insert the physical key into the ignition, the thieves would employ tactics so-called “relay attack”.

During the Symposium, participants and the Moderator asked pertinent questions to YBrs Puan Mas Tina on VTREC’s initiatives taken to drive reduction of cases of vehicle theft and fostering deeper engagement on the success story in reducing rate of vehicle theft in Malaysia.
