Petaling Jaya, 30 May 2024: With over than 38,322 vehicles have had been stolen in 2013 then reduced to 4,086 thefts in 2023, of which reduced by 89% according to insurance industry statistics, the Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC) was invited by TV3 MHI to Sri Pentas to talk about “WASPADA KECURIAN KENDERAAN’” or beware of vehicle theft. The session ultimate objective is to raising awareness and educating the public the need of crime prevention among the motorists.
VTREC Co-ordinator Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid was requested to deliver her educational and awareness messages in simple, friendly and easy to understand communication style to explain on how easy to prevent vehicle theft and effective tips to the public during the ‘LIVE’ show.
YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, Co-ordinator of VTREC were asked multiple questions on how to prevent vehicle theft including the latest Modus Operandi and the impact of latest technology against vehicle theft.

There were demo sets being displayed which let viewers have a closer glance to understand the anti-theft devices among others Immobilizer, GPS, OBD, relay, mechanical locks such as steering lock, for motorcycle such as chains, pad lock, gear lock, break disk lock as well as hand break lock. When asked by Puan Hasrena Kassim on how far devices will be able to protect vehicle, Puan Mas Tina explained one of the best actions that car owners can do is car window etching to discourage thieves since it makes it harder for them to profit from the stolen vehicle. The etching makes the vehicle less attractive to thieves. Window etch is a permanent vehicle registration number is etched onto all of a car window.

When further asked on other than that how anti-theft devices will be able to protect vehicle and slow down the process of theft in various ways, she begun with how GPS works. According to Puan Mas Tina, GPS is a satellites device that transmits a signal to GPS device to decode and compute the precise location of a vehicle. GPS enables the owner of a vehicle to locate their vehicle whereabout exactly.
Then she continued with Immobilizer. Immobilizer is an electronic security device fitted to a motor vehicle that prevent the engine from being started, it prevents vehicle from moving after illegal entry has been achieved or it is acting as a ‘pelumpuh’ to the vehicle system that causing it stop and thus reduce motor vehicle theft. With a proper installation like mono colour of wires will delay the process of stealing which will deter vehicle theft process.
Puan Mas Tina explaining that although keyless or push start button is a technology that have become increasing popular due to the fact that key fobs are easy to carry in pocket or handback can can can be started by just pushing the button.
When asked by Encik Fadzly Fuad in respect to car with keyless which the focus of theft recently, can it be dublicate and how to prevent, Puan Mas Tina replied that that is the new technology to ease the driver, keyless technology or push start button and don’t need the key to be put into the ignition. however easily manipulated by the relay attack on the data or frequency it has. The key Fob will communicate with the car to lock or unlock the car, thief mimicking its signals, after that replying the signal to the car. The car was tricked into thinking the key fob is nearby, allowing the thieves to unlock, get into the car, start the car and drove to steal it. This can be done even below 1 minute.

Beside public must always be vigilant, never take their vehicle protection for granted and not to provide opportunities for vehicle theft crime as well as heighten awareness about vehicle theft prevention, nevertheless to cover your vehicles be it motorcycle or car to deter or attract a potential thief, ” when asked to provide her final words during the TV3 MHI event.
